Seeking God’s Heart- by Bryan Shelley

Today’s Verse: 1 Samuel 10:19a But you have today rejected your God who delivers you from all your calamities and your distresses; yet you have said, ‘No, but set a king over us!’ NASB

We find ourselves in situations sometimes by overt decisions we make and at other times we just passively let things happen in our lives. In a lucid moment we look all about us and ponder how we arrived in this particular place or predicament. We have quite possibly let certain people, authorities and things take control of our lives. Our compass no longer points to true north. The people of Israel, God’s chosen people, had looked around and saw that everyone else around them had a king and they decided they should have one too. But wait, in order to come to this conclusion and give in to the desire to be like everyone else they had to reject God as their King. At a distance of space and time, we readily question the sensibility of such a seemingly foolish transaction. They traded God as King for a mere man. They traded the perfect for the imperfect. From our perspective, it is a bit like a foolish and ill thought out lark one of our teen age children might be expected to hatch. We can read the “rest of the story” and know what a poor decision this was, but they could not be dissuaded. To whom or to what have you ceded control of your life? Do material things or certain people control and limit what you can or cannot do? We even say on our money in the USA that it is in God that we trust. To me, that in itself seems a bit of a dubious connection. For too many, it is in reality in money we trust. If you could write down all the areas and activities of your life, the list could no doubt get to be lengthy. Try capturing maybe just the top three most important ones on a sheet of paper. Then ask yourself, is God in control of these? Or have we by commission or omission rejected control by our divine Father to some other lesser authority? Regardless of how you arrived at this place, God can help you out if you truly trust Him and His authority to rule in your life. Don’t squander the opportunity to make the change.
