God weighs motives

Today’s Verse: Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives. NASB

Goodness, how quickly this verse started my mind racing! How true indeed is this observation of our basic human nature. We are so quick to rationalize that, for my part, I don’t think at times I even know I am doing it. You know the routine. It is an almost instantaneous transaction whereby we convince ourselves that something we are doing, although serving our own selfish needs, is really for the “best”. Not a part of our nature we are particularly proud of is it? God has it pegged perfectly in this verse. We convince ourselves that what ever it is we are doing is okay or right from our own perspective. However, we need to understand that God sees all these transactions from a completely different economy. His weight and measure for our actions is totally related to motives. Is our heart right regardless of what it is we are trying to accomplish?

As always, may God bless your heart as you seek His.

  1. This is a good reminder, Bryan. In the end, God is not obligated to bless anything we do of ourselves but what Christ does through us. In all things we should ask ourselves, is this going to give glory to God?
