Abide

love

Today’s Verse: 1 John 4:16 We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. NASB

In Matthew Henry’s commentary, he says, “There is great communion between the God of love and the loving soul.” What caught my attention about today’s verse is the thought of what it really means to abide. It tells us that if we abide in love, we abide in God. It makes sense in that God is love. But what does it mean to abide? The KJV uses the word “dwelleth”. The dictionary says that abide means to stay with or to reside somewhere. God’s direction is not for us to practice love occasionally, but rather always. That is our “space”. We are to always live in love. This is not a calling to send out sweet gooey cards and sentiment (Don’t get me wrong here, I love getting these!), but to live the kind of love God’s word describes over and over as sacrificial. It is a love that puts the needs of others ahead of our own. It is a high calling, but then so is dwelling with God. This godly agape love, loves unselfishly. As a result, we continually reside in God’s loving presence in our lives. Let’s live in love.

May God bless your heart as you seek His.

  1. Bryan – Awesome, simple post. I love the small statement, “That is our ‘space’.” Blessings – John
