Christian Up!

christian-up-bumper1

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. NASB

There is a popular bumper sticker in Texas that says, “Cowboy up”. A twist on a popular Willie Nelson tune that originally went, “Mommas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys.” is, “Mommas, don’t let your cowboys grow up to be babies.” Christians are often perceived to be a lot of things by the world. One of them is not typically strong. We are seen as those in need of a religion crutch, or as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger might put it, “Girlie men.” Paul has completed some rather difficult correction for the Corinthian church in this letter. They had a number of things to fix before his arrival. Here at the close of his letter, he reminds them of several things in summary. He tells them to stand ready and not be complacent. He commands that they hold fast to the things they had been taught. Then he says an interesting thing. He says, “be strong” and “act like men”. Christians are to be different from the world, however we are not told to be milk-toast wimps either. Jesus certainly would not be considered a wimp would He? He’s our example. We too are in for some tougher times it appears. We may have to stand firm, be on the alert and act like men. A good reminder for us as disciples these days might well be a bumper sticker that simply says, “Christian Up!” ’nuff said.

May God bless your heart as you seek His.

  1. A lot of comments I read in the blogosphere talk about how overbearing Christians can be (well, they said *are*). And that, too, is not acting like men (or women). That’s being a bully. So, Christian up, indeed!

  2. Amen Philippa! They are to know we are His by our love. Love shares the truth, but it does not whack others on the head with it. Thanks for your comments. Please stop by again.
