Growing into a temple

Today’s Verse: Ephesians 2:21 “in who the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord,” NASB

OK, you really need to read verses 11-22 to get the whole context of this particular verse. In brief, the apostle Paul is teaching that “in Christ Jesus” we are one. He makes the point three different ways. He says that physical circumcision or uncircumcision does not matter. It is the spiritual circumcision of the heart in baptism that unites us in Christ (Eph. 2:11-13; Col. 2:11-12). Second, he says that there is no longer a division based in adherence to the Law which separated Jew from Gentile. Thirdly, he makes the same point concerning unity in Christ by saying that we are no longer citizens and non-citizens in God’s kingdom, but are all citizens “in Christ” of His kingdom. The church, that is the saved,  is to be one in Christ. The point Paul makes which I want to draw attention to in all of this is that we are “growing” into this holy temple. As we become individually and collectively more Christ-like, that is living as His image, we grow closer together. We are not to sit still, but be growing in holiness and thus ever more exemplify Christ to the world as the dwelling places of His Spirit. That’s the design from the beginning for Christ’s church. We are to be one in Him. In Christ, and in Him alone can we have unity. Let us continue to grow.

May God bless your heart as you seek His.

  1. Hi Bryan, when you consider the fact that the God of this universe lives in us as believers, it is hard for our minds to fathom this truth. We no longer have to look anywhere but within as the Spirit of God which raised Christ from the dead now lives in our spirit. We now are part of his body. His power transforms us.

This is all too much to understand. If we could only get a grip on this truth. We are holy because Christ who is holy lives in us! Wow!
How do we go on sinning knowing that ?

  2. A big amen! We are one in Spirit, let’s grow in it. Great post!
