Who’s Truth?

bible-open

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 14:37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment. NASB

We are more likely to hear some “new truth” from the cadre of television evangelists these days than in our church bodies, but it has obviously always been a problem. Paul is direct when he asks the rhetorical question, “who gave who God’s commands?” Obviously it was him as an apostle of Jesus Christ that gave them the words and the pattern of teaching they were to follow. The New Testament was not in the pew racks just yet, but he was obviously dealing with those whom through their gifts of prophesy would reveal in part God’s revelation for the church until it came. We need to be wary today just as they had to be then to test what is being taught with the scripture. People who sit and soak in every word of those who profess to teach the truth and do not look up the Bible passages being used and check their actual wording and context are just asking to be misled. Think they would never do such a thing? I was listening to one just the other night and he was speaking to a church filled with several thousand people and was misquoting and using scriptures out of context right and left. I shouted at the television, “Why doesn’t somebody say something?” At closer inspection, there was not one person in the audience with an open Bible in their lap. For sure I have no such agenda nor do I have thousands of adherents hanging on my every word. We should encourage people to have their Bibles open and reading along so that we can know the truth straight from God’s word not filtered through someone who may or may not be dealing, as it were, from the top of the deck. If you want your ears tickled and to be told that it is all about you and your comfort, there is a seemingly endless number of  “evangelists” who will be glad to have you tune in and send your money. The apostle Paul says if you want to know God’s truth, open up His word and know it. Don’t blindly take someone else’s word for it.

As always, may God bless your heart as you seek His.
