Owe naught but love

credit-cards

Today’s Verse: Romans 13:8-9 Owe no man anything, but love one another; he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. KJV

Often times we try to make things so complicated. Doctrines and theological discussions and differences cloud the really simple and pure message of scripture. Paul clears away the smoke and confusion about the message he is trying to get across. It is a very simple and direct message that should hit us right where we are living today. He says there is a very basic fundamental law in God’s kingdom economy. Simply put, owe no one anything but love. How much clearer and appropriate for today could it get? In today’s man-made economic mess, it seems that responsibility and accountability have taken a holiday. It is such a complex mess that even the best and brightest are struggling to find solutions in the fog of an economic equivalent of all out war. As usual, those who played by the rules and saved for the future will have to bail out those who broke the rules, borrowed money they couldn’t repay and now want someone else to pick up the mess. It is easy in such an environment to pull up short of considering “I owe them love”, but the scriptural message is clear. Paul goes on to say that love forbids adultery, forbids murder, forbids stealing, forbids covetousness (a good lesson for those whose greed created this current storm) and love sums up all the commandments. Isn’t God way pure and simple? If only we would follow His way life would be much more joyful. That’s His best for us, we just fall short. We unfortunately end up owing a lot more than love don’t we? Then we service that debt in our priorities before our love debt. Many let lust and greed establish strongholds in their hearts and as a result can rationalize all sorts of ungodly behavior. As we all make often difficult financial and other life decisions in the days ahead, let us allow Paul’s words of godly wisdom ring in our ears; “owe no man anything, but love.”

As always, may God bless your heart as you seek His.
