This house cannot contain You

boxToday’s Verse: 1 Kings 8:27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!” NASB

On the occasion of the dedication of the Temple God had instructed Solomon to build, these words were spoken. Even in all the splendor of the gold clad place of worship, Solomon knew that it was not big enough to contain God. I think that all too often we try to put God in a small building, or a box or an appointment calendar. Is that an attempt to limit His involvement in our lives or to enhance it? That answer is for each of us to search out our heart and motives for why we do what we do and think what we think. I grew up calling the church meeting place “God’s house”. We were instructed by well meaning members not to run and so on in “God’s House”. It was not until I was an adult that I began to understand that the church is the people not some man made structure. Contrary to the little rhyme with hand gestures from childhood, “Here’s the church and here’s the steeple, open it up and there’s the people.” Oddly enough, the opposite is the scriptural truth. The church is the people, not some box we keep God in until Sunday next. Today, as His children, we can and should continually enjoy His presence with us. We don’t have to go to an earthly place to meet Him. We have only to bow and seek Him in prayer and approach Him with our praise, worship and petitions. But He is not waiting in some little square or rectangular building for us to show up looking for Him any more than He could be wholly contained in the Temple. Yes, His presence resided there as long as the people worshiped Him alone, but He was not contained there. We seemingly work hard at trying to make God small enough to understand Him. It is simply not possible and totally unnecessary anyway. That was the reason He sent Jesus Christ into the world as Emanuel, God with us. We can know Him by knowing Christ. We can know Christ by reading God’s word and seeking His presence throughout the day every day as we go about the work of serving Him. Take a glance at your calender today and see where God is in all that. Is He in a box or is He everywhere?

May God bless your heart as you seek His.

  1. What I like about coming here is you profess so cleanly the message of scripture without getting caught up in the problems of the world and the problems of the Church today.

Here it is scripture! Wa La! I need to learn from this and not get caught up in my hot buttons so often!

    Thank you!

  2. Thank you for the wonderful compliment. It is something we all struggle with to just get the pure message of scripture out there. Previous beliefs, tradition and just plain ole worldly noise can blur what God intended for us to see and hear. God bless us both in that struggle.
