You have died

Today’s Verse: Colossians 3:3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. NASB

That’s actually quite a relief. I mean if you are already dead, that’s one less big thing to have to worry about, right? So many spend countless anxious moments considering their fate. The whole issue of our mortality is one we generally avoid, simply because it seems a bit morbid anyway and people might start to think we are a bit too taken with the subject. On the other end, some refuse to think about it at all and thus stuff it somewhere deep inside hoping to avoid it by that means. I like this verse, because it says we are already dead. Well, died to be exact. So, since we can still wiggle our toes or read this devotional, likely we have not actually passed from this life to the next. (did you wiggle your toes?….I did…power of suggestion I suppose) So what is meant here. If we have died to something, yet we are still alive physically , we must be talking about spiritual things. What we have died to, because of our death burial and resurrection in baptism, is the penalty of sin. We still struggle against the power of sin and temptation, but we are delivered from the death sentence sin brings on us by Christ’s saving atonement. That is, His blood has washed us clean, the debt has been paid by His actions and our obedience to His calling. As a result of this we still need to die to self daily and choose to serve our Lord, but for the penalty of sin, we are free. That good friend is great news! First, internalize it in yourself that you are indeed freed from sin’s sting and then share that news with someone. Remember the relief you felt knowing that the 500 pound gorilla of sin in need of forgiveness was off your back? There are people all around us that are desperately searching or hiding from that very knowledge. Hey, you’ve already died, so lighten up and let a little joy in your life today! It does not get any better than that.
