Love debt

Today’s Verse: Romans 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. NASB

Did you know that you have a love debt? “Hey, put it in the stack with all the other bills in the hall”, right? Well, no not actually. This is the debt that we are to move to the front of the line. It is certainly consistent with what Jesus said was the two most important things. He said that we are to “love God” and “love others”. (Matt 22:36-40) Everything else we are to do flows from those two priority tasks. They are not Sunday only things either are they? Each day when we rise in the morning until we lay back down at night, these are to be our priority in deciding what to say and do. Of course we know this. But, to be frank, I do this better some days than others. Not that there are ever days when I don’t love God or love others, but there are certainly too many days or moments when I fail to make that my focus and priority. Selfishness creeps in and I seek my own comfort. The thought however that the love of others is a debt is one that had not been how I looked at it. I tend to think more of loving others as being me doing what I am supposed to because I simply feel like it. Seeing it as a debt owed puts a different take on this whole idea of loving others. We owe others love. There exists a love debt that is owed. Not just because I feel like it. Obviously it goes better when we remember that we are to love others and we feel like it at the same time. But what about when we don’t feel like it? If we fail to pay other debt like house or car payments, there are consequences. Paul says, by inverse, if we do not fulfill this love debt to others we have fallen short of fulfilling God’s commandments. In short, we sin. Think on that for a while today. Remember, your love debt payment is due today.
