Today’s Verse: 1 John 2:24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. NASB

It is an interesting and important idea. We would not say this of any other words would we? If the word is let to abide in us, then we abide in Him. If you have a favorite author, you would not consider yourself to be abiding in them just because you enjoy reading their books would you? Yet when John speaks of what the word of God does in us when we are faithful to deposit it into ourselves, it is just that reality. The reality that if we chew on God’s word, digest it and it becomes part of us, we are abiding in Him. You might be considering, “Yes, but how about the steps to salvation and such?” This idea that John is teaching here certainly is not exclusive of what God’s word teaches concerning such things. You cannot become a Christian by being a hearer only. But, the idea of “abiding” in it is not to be taken lightly. The Greek word translated as abide is “meno”. It means to stay, as in to stay in a given place or relationship. It assumes that you are already there and are now making the decision to remain right there in that place, in that relationship. He speaks just a couple of verses later of an anointing. This anointing is the word received. We have heard His word. We have believed His word. We have confessed Him as God’s Son and have been baptized to be washed clean of our sin. It starts and continues in His word. The idea of salvation is an interesting one. It has past accomplishment for the Christian. However, it is also a present process and yet even a future prospect. Justification, sanctification and glorification. (Phil 1:6; 2:13; Rom 13:11; Phil 2:12) Abiding means that you have it and are choosing to stay in it and in Him. It is a beautiful thought that expresses the importance of staying in God’s word because it is directly related to staying in Him. Let us acknowledge and grow in our relationship with Him today by abiding “in that which you heard from the beginning.”

Lord, let me abide with You this day and always as I dwell in Your word and in Your service as an act of obedience and expression of my love for You. Amen.
