Image of the Heavenly

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:49 Just as we have borne the image of the earthy, we will also bear the image of the heavenly. NASB

Often our self image and others perceptions of us are at a disconnect. Too many have a poor self image when others see them as very nice, interesting and attractive people. At least one key contributor to this is all the media we are bombarded with that we subliminally allow to define for us what is beautiful or handsome. When we compare ourselves to these air-brushed, skinny and six-pack abbed idols, in reality even the people who posed for the photos don’t measure up in real life. Ross Perot used to insist that his employees read a management book titled “Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun”. One of the sayings in the book was “You are what you are perceived to be by others.” You have to chew on that one for a while and there is much truth to it in a worldly sense. It is certainly not a purely Christian perspective. What we are as Christians has much more to do with whose we are than who we are. We certainly don’t rise up out of the waters of baptism perfect, just forgiven. But, as we continue to become the likeness of the heavenly, it should also begin to be reflected in perceptions of what people see in us. Ours is to be an inner beauty that eclipses mere mortal, earthy veneer. As we move beyond mere obedience for obedience’s sake and become His image in our lives, people will unnaturally be attracted to us. They will desire that what is in us, the Holy Spirit, which we have allowed to remake us from the inside out. Do others perceive His image when they see you? I pray that that is truer today than yesterday and all the more obvious tomorrow.

  1. Bryan, you are so right. We are, without a doubt, being brain washed by the media and the Cosmopolitan Magazine covers that we see in the supermarket aisle. No one can, nor should attempt to live up to this unnatural state of physical perfection. It’s not beauty, only a mirage. True beauty comes from within. Thanks for being there. Have a blessed day.
