Earthen Vessels

Today’s Verse: 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; NASB

We are always on the lookout for interesting backyard decorations. A while back, my wife found a deal on some Mexican pottery which was supposed to be a series of orange dishes and some little clay doves. I think it was supposed to be part of a fountain she visualized. Personally, I do not know much about pottery except there is good and not. When I tried to put the pottery to use in our intended purpose, it was discovered that the reason that it was cheap and “rustic” was that it had not been fired. Add water and it returned back the orange dirt from whence it came. I managed to salvage a few of the doves, but they too went the way of the rest after a couple of rains. As God’s children, we are certainly not cheap. God was willing to pay an enormous price for each of us. We do seem to be all too fragile spiritually and physically at times. At our best we are earthen vessels. I like that depiction of us. We are formed of dust and ultimately return to that state at the end of this life. As we are exposed to trials and temptations, the fire, and choose God’s way, we are tempered as pottery. As we mature in Christ, we become hardier pottery and no longer disentegrate in the slightest rain or trouble. However, even at our best, there is no comparison of our outer pottery shell and the treasure trusted within. It is when we are able to recognize that we are but earthen creations; precious and valuable only because God has put His Spirit within us. It is the treasure of His power acting on us, in us and through us that makes us different. We have within us the treasure of the gospel message. The apostle Paul reminds that we need to remember what we are and whose we are. We have value because of God. We are chosen as the vessels to carry the good news to a hurting world. He is the power and the message, not us. What an honor and high calling for such simple earthen vessels as we. Father, You are the potter; we are but the clay in Your hands.
