Seeking God’s Heart- by Bryan Shelley

Audio Version: seeking-gods-heart-genesis-6_18

Today’s Verse: Genesis 6:18 “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark–you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.” NASB

Interestingly enough, this is the first time God uses the word translated as “covenant” in the Bible. Today, we know Him as a God of covenants, but Noah was the first to hear of it. God had become so angry with the rebelliousness of mankind that He decided to destroy all but the occupants of the ark and start over. What awesome power He can wield. His covenant with Noah is that because of his faith, he and his family would be saved through the waters. So much of the Old Covenant’s intention is to point us to the New. The apostle Peter refers to this covenant with Noah as a type for water baptism in 1 Peter 3:20-21.

who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you–not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience–through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

So, the covenant God made with Noah is to point us to the covenant made with all who would obey and be saved by contact with Christ’s saving blood in the waters of baptism and enter covenant relationship with Him. God’s story is not circular. Rather it is very linear, ever moving towards its conclusion. First was sin. Then preparation for the Messiah. Then His coming and sacrifice as the high point in the redemptive plan. Now the good news of His salvation is spread by His church. We are a covenant people. We are in a covenant as Christians to Him whose name we bear and have given our lives and fortunes as Lord and Savior. Take a moment to contemplate the fact that you, as His, are part of the narrative of God’s redemptive plan for mankind. What an awesome privilege and responsibility. Will you act as a covenant son or daughter with the obedience of faith found in Noah?

Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did. Genesis 6:22
