Today’ Verse: Romans 6:1 “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?” NASB
I don’t know why really, but I am reminded of the “I Love Lucy Show”. There was one particular episode where Lucy went shopping at a big sale. After she had picked out a number of items, she asked the clerk who was assisting her to let her know when she had “saved enough to pay for all this”. Well, it got a laugh and I obviously still remember it as a classic TV comedy line. Some Christians in Rome were apparently beginning to think somewhat the same way about grace. They were asking, in a sense, “let us know when we have sinned enough to be saved from all this”. The logic is as flawed as was Lucy’s. They were thinking that if grace came because of sin, well… if we sin a bunch we get more grace. …NOT! (Or as Paul responds, “May it never be! v.2) That’s like telling the governor who just pardoned you for capital murder, “Thanks, I believe I’ll do it again”. To purposefully sin after receiving God’s forgiveness through His grace and mercy is to spit in His face. Perish the thought. The better response is to say no to sin, and when we mess up and do sin, to agree with God that we stumbled and thank Him again for the forgiveness already received.
