Seeking God’s Heart- Bryan Shelley

Entry for April 29, 2008

Today’s Verse: Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. NASB

Hebrews 11 is often called the Hall of Fame for faith. It would also be appropriate to call it the Hall of Faith and Obedience. The two are seen together if they are indeed seen at all. Acts 13:22 is God testifying about David. He says David is a “man after His own heart” and that David “will do all My will”. This idea struck me this last week as I was preparing material on having hearts like God. It is crucial to understand the relationship between heart and doing His will. Jesus spoke of being not just hearers, but also doers of God’s words. So here we are in Hebrews in a chapter about to recount all those acts of faith and obedience. Verse one even defines what is meant by faith. It is “the conviction of things not seen.” We obviously were not there at the creation to see how God made that happen. We are told here that the way we understand it is through faith. Yet, it is a faith easily swayed by those whose agenda includes denying the very acts and existence of God which we are told to have faith in. How was the world prepared and created by His words? I have to admit that I do not have a clue. But then the verse does not say that by faith we will figure it out. We just accept by faith that God’s word on the matter is true. I can do that because I can know that in my life and in those throughout time who put their faith in God, that we have never been let down. I know that I can trust God to do what He says. Hopefully you can agree. What we need to work on then is not faith that bolsters the heart, but faith that takes action. We may not be in the football, baseball, basketball or any other Hall of Fame, but we can reach toward the goal of being in the most prestigious of all. We can, by faith, take action today. We can, by faith, take God at His word and put that faith into motion. Reach out in faith today and make a difference in someone else’s life. It will make a difference in yours.
