Seeking God’s Heart- by Bryan Shelley

Entry for April 23, 2008

Today’s Verse: Matthew 5:2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,” NASB

I know, I know, you are thinking, “What a weird place to cut off the passage, right?” If you weren’t, go back and read it again. This is the beginning of the discourse by Jesus called the Sermon on the Mount. A couple of observations. First He goes up on the mount I suppose to better seen and heard because of the crowd. Second, He sat down (v.2) which is the traditional position for one who is about to teach. Then, He opens His mouth and begins to teach. What a marvelous event to have beheld in person. I can hardly even imagine what it must have been like to hear this first hand the very first time it was ever said, can you? What a heady opportunity to sit at the master’s feet, God’s feet, and hear Him share from His heart. It is no wonder that later Jesus tells the disciples that they are the envy of kings and prophets alike who had waited lifetimes for the very opportunity they now enjoyed, and maybe even took a bit fore granted. He proceeds to tell the disciples what are to be the characteristics they should assimilate, what kind of influence they were to be, how to handle personal relationships as a disciple, how to differ from the outwardly religious and how one is to enter the kingdom of heaven. He shares the foundation upon which they are to build lives of purpose and serve as His disciples. What would we be willing give to be able to hear those words once, leave lone over and over again. Like the disciples who followed Him during His earthly ministry, we often miss the opportunity to hear the Lord speak or merely take it fore granted. How is that? We have His very words recorded in our Bibles. We can go to Him and sit at His feet and learn as He speaks anytime we desire. How often do we take advantage of that opportunity to be before Him just as those who heard Him that day long ago? How often do we sit and marvel at His teaching and His wisdom? How often do we seek His presence in the word? There might even have been some passing nearby the place where Jesus was teaching that day when He sat on the mount and spoke. They may have been busily on their way on some urgent errand or business and passed right by and missed the spiritual banquet He had prepared for them. How often do we walk right by Him and His word every day? How often do we stop and listen? Jesus is seated and is ready to teach. Are you ready to listen? Commit right now to take some time this week and read Matthew chapters 5-7. Sit at His feet and marvel at His words of life.
