Seeking God’s Heart

Entry for March 05, 2008

Today’s Verse Matthew 6:34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” NASB

If you had it to do over again, you would do it differently. Do you ever spend time looking back on times in your life when you really blew it and wished you could have a “do-over”? I have heard many say that they wished they could go back and relive their youth knowing what they know now. Maybe it would go better, but maybe it would just be different. Do you ever catch yourself worried about what’s next? Mema always said, “Troubles come in threes.” If only two things have happened, are you waiting for the hammer to fall on number three? Sometimes we face decisions where there are just too many options and possible outcomes. We get into a sort of decision paralysis, not wanting to make a mistake. Maybe we spend hours concerned about what’s to become of us or how things will turn next. Whether we are gazing back wishing or forward wishing, Jesus has a simple and straight forward response, “Don’t do that.” Anxiety can steal the one day that we have control over. The one that we are in right now. Today is the only day in which we can make a difference. The only day we can say we are sorry, or say I love you, or serve Jesus is today. We can make plans. There is nothing in Jesus’ teaching that tells us to disengage our intellect and just float along like a “Forest Gump” or a feather through our days blown about by the winds. Being anxious or just wishing is what He is saying we are not to do because there is nothing to be gained that we do not already have or will receive anyway. It is a good thing to make goals and assign yourself tasks required to achieve those goals. However, at some point, let’s call it “today”; you actually have to do it. Sorry you never finished school or got further with your education? Pick up the phone, call the school and find out how to register and take the first class. Wish you had been able to say I love you before it was too late? Write them a letter and say it now. If they are already dead, you don’t have to mail it, just write it now and ask God to make the delivery for you. Then, pick up the phone and tell someone who is still alive you love them too. Today is when all things can happen or not. Today is plenty to work on. Start it with a prayer and let’s do it! Hooray for today!!!
