Seeking God’s Heart

Entry for March 12, 2008

Today’s Verse: Philippians 4:8 Finally,  brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. NASB

How often every day do we find ourselves focused on just plain old junk? It might be past failures, gossip around the workplace, worrying about the future or you fill in the blank. You know… junk. Sometimes it is difficult to know what in the world is appropriate for us to dwell on. If you go to the supermarket, you see all the crazy magazine covers with stories and pictures designed to lure us into buying. On TV we are accosted with pitch after pitch trying to get us to focus on having to have whatever they are selling. All around us the world is doing its best to get us to focus on what it desires. Paul reminds us of what, as God’s children, we are to be focused on. The list is very different than that of the world we live in day to day. The true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent and worthy of praise. There is only one source that meets those requirements, God’s word. Do you have a Bible verse or verses memorized that you can call to mind when you need wisdom or peace or comfort? God and His word, the Bible, are the only truly trustworthy sources of all these things listed. We are to spend time with God in prayer and time in His word each day lest we run out of spiritual gas. We need not lose our focus just because we still live out lives in the everydayness of everyday in the world. However, if we are not pursuing these “things”, we should not be surprised when we lose sight of the shore and are tossed about by the tempest that surrounds us. Anchor your life and thoughts in Him today and know His peace and have the wisdom necessary to meet any trial or temptation that may come your way.
