Seeking God’s Heart

Entry for March 07, 2008

Today’s Verse: 1 Samuel 13:14 “But now your kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” NASB

So many people are going around today with an entitlement attitude. They truly believe that life owes them something just for showing up. Hands are not out asking for help, but rather demanding it with an attitude. There are also people who call themselves disciples of Jesus Christ who fully expect to be blessed just because they show up now and then. They seem to have an entitlement attitude about what God owes them because they accepted His gift of salvation. They walk away from worship complaining about not “getting anything out of it today”. Is Christianity really about what we can get out of it? Is discipleship about us? I am not sure where in the Bible one gets that idea. King Saul was a tall and handsome guy who had a tremendous honor bestowed on him to be the replacement for God as King of Israel. He started out ok, but fell into disobedience and arrogance as time went on. God told him to do something specific and he chose not to do it. When God confronted him, he had excuses. God’s law prohibits seeking guidance from fortune tellers and diviners of the spirits. Saul also sinned by getting advice from one. God finally had enough and told Saul that he had been replaced. God was and still is looking for those who are “after His own heart”. We cannot expect God to continually put up with an entitled attitude demanding Him to bless with no expectation of obedience from us. Again and again, the scriptures tell us that we are to respond to God’s grace with thanksgiving and good works. As James says, what kind of faith is it that does not respond in good works? God wants you. God loves you. God does not need you. Maybe we require a dose of humility sooner rather than later before God gives up and replaces us with someone who will actually do what He asks. Pray and ask Him who knows the depths of our hearts to search yours today and reveal to you any part of this that might be true of you. Confess that you have been off course, repent, get back up and walk today fully submitted to His Lordship over your life. That’s what you said you wanted when you confessed you desired Him as Savior AND Lord at baptism wasn’t it? Lord, help us to be worthy, willing and grateful servants.
